With the development of IP networks and FMC services, requirements for simplified network operation and maintenance (OAM) become higher. Huawei is greatly concerned about how to further simplify network OAM and reduce the OPEX. Based on her deep understanding on customers' OAM mode and comprehensive study on the future development of networks, Huawei first launches the next generation network management system, that is, the iManager U2000 system (U2000).
The U2000 is an integrated and unified management platform for all the network equipment provided by Huawei. It inherits the functions and operation modes of the T2000, N2000 BMS, and N2000 DMS, and can manage transport equipment, access equipment, and IP equipment (including switches and PTN equipment) in a unified manner. With powerful management functions at the element management layer (EML) and network management layer (NML), the U2000 is designed as the network management system for Huawei equipment. In the telecommunication management network (TMN) hierarchy, the U2000 is located between the EML and NML, and supports all the functions at the EML and NML. The following figure shows the position of the U2000 in a network.

Integrated with all functions of the T2000, N2000 BMS, and N2000 DMS, the U2000 can manage both single-domain products individually and all the transport equipment, access equipment, and IP equipment of Huawei in a unified manner. The U2000 allows you to perform end-to-end (E2E) cross-domain service provisioning and cross-domain fault location, which fully meets the requirements for developing network convergence.
E2E full service provisioning that guarantees fast service deployment
The U2000 provides the E2E scheduling capability for full services such as the IP service, WDM service, MSTP service, microwave service, and access service, which fully meets the fast development requirement of customer services. In addition, unified GUI and E2E maintenance for management of various domains are adopted, which simplifies the coordination work between OAM departments.
E2E management of mobile carrier services
This feature is about the E2E management capacity on the IP services and transport services. In a hybrid networking consisting of traditional TDM equipment and packet transmission equipment, and E2E service creation and maintenance can be achieved, which fully meet the development trend of the existing IP-based mobile carrier network.
E2E management of broadband services
This feature enables E2E management and configuration of broadband access services, Metro switches, routers, and backbone WDM services.
With the intelligent fault location technology, the U2000 provides a fault location function that only takes seconds and is specific to the affected services. In this case, the U2000 can quickly locate and recover from faults to reduce losses.
Direct display of service status for active OAM and fast troubleshooting
A one-touch fault location process involving five levels (network -> equipment -> card -> port -> service) is provided. Alarms directly show the availability of services, which removes the need of human analysis and judgment. The services affected by alarms are clear at a glance. Moreover, the U2000 can also send key alarm notifications externally, enabling network operators to learn network faults in real time.
Associated alarm reporting that avoids repeated fault location of different departments
The association of IP alarms with WDM alarms in reporting avoids repeated fault location of departments, and thus greatly shortens the time of fault location.
Improved IP alarm readability with effective massive alarm filtering functionIn
The face of massive alarms of the IP domain, the alarm filtering function can help to effectively reduce about 85% of irrelevant alarms. In this manner, the accuracy and efficiency of fault location during alarm correlation analysis is improved.
Visualized management on IP services solves the problem of unclearness in IP service management. By supporting network convergence, visualized management, and one-touch configuration, the U20000 significantly reduces the difficulty of the OAM personnel in learning the IP technology. Compared with the traditional IP equipment configuration performed on a per-NE basis through command lines, visualized management on IP services improves the configuration efficiency by 20 times. Furthermore, visualized management on IP services reduces the complexity of network OAM, helps carriers in reducing the overall OAM costs, and realizes the capability transition of the OAM personnel.
Visualized service monitoring to learn network status in real time
The U2000 can monitor the status, performance indicators, alarms, and service topology of IP services in real time.
Visualized object relationships to learn the complex layer relationship easily
Services are correlated with tunnels, and tunnels are correlated with routes. The layered object relationships facilitate fault location for users.

Visualized service provisioning:The efficiency of service provisioning is improved by two to three times. This is achieved through service templates, one-touch setting of service parameters, service creation through duplication, batch tunnel creation, and automatic calculation of static routes.
Visualized clocks network-wide that simplifies the clock OAM:The U2000 displays the clocks of the entire network in a topology view. This enables you to configure clocks in a unified manner, and monitor the status, tracking relationships, and protection status of clocks in real time.

NBIs of abundant types and functions that guarantee fast integration
The U2000 provides rich NBIs, including SNMP, CORBA, XML, and FTP NBIs. These NBIs are applicable to the IP, transport, and access domains. The standards designed for the XML NBI of the U2000 has become the industry standards in China. Huawei has established strategic cooperation with mainstream OSS vendors for the U2000, which covers 60% of the top 50 global carriers. In addition, the U2000 can implement fast NBI integration and provides abundant data for upper-layer network management systems.
High availability and security
The U2000 supports a variety of high availability (HA) schemes, including the HA system hot standby scheme and ATCT hot standby.
Powerful software and hardware platforms
The U2000 is based on the integrated management application platform (iMAP) of Huawei. It supports hardware platforms such as the Sun workstation, PC server, and ATCA, and software platforms such as the Sybase database, SQL Server database, Oracle database, Solaris OS, Windows OS, and SUSE Linux OS. Hence, the U2000 can be used to provide not only high-end solutions for large networks but also low-cost solutions for small and medium networks.
Green, space-saving, highly expansible, and cost-effective ATCA
Compared with traditional servers, the carrier-class blade server of advanced telecom computing architecture (ATCA) saves 90% of space of the telecommunications room and 80% of the hardware investment. The ATCA is also environment-friendly and energy-saving. The combination of the U2000 distributed software and ATCA can meet the expansion requirements of networks. Specifically, only more ATCA cards and software modules are needs for network expansion. The software and hardware systems do not need to be replaced. Thus, customer investments are fully utilized.
Easy maintainability and efficient OAM
The U2000 has a variety of easy maintainability features. The U2000 supports the automatic upgrade of the client software and automatically keeps the client version consistent with the server version. Moreover, it supports various database backup methods. For example, the U2000 can automatically back up the NE databases and U2000 database at scheduled times, remotely back up databases, and locally back up databases. In this manner, the security of network data is guaranteed.
